Thymus

Castle Mound

The Castle is built on the dolerite intrusion in the south east point of Holy Island.  There are numerous colonies of thyme growing on the castle mound, both in the grass and between the many exposed stones.

mound.  The pathway to the castle is in the
bottom right hand corner of the picture.

The root of this thyme has been exposed
by erosion of the soil and stones. Thymes
growing in dry conditions grow very long
roots in search of moisture and this root demonstrates it very well.

footpath to the shore on the Heugh, at the
south west point of Holy Island.  These rocks
are part of the dolerite dyke across the
south of the island.
